I loved Elijah and Shaw’s story. It was the sweetest, slow burn and I found myself staying up way too late to see how their HEA unfolded. I loved how they met in an advice column, having no idea they were across the hall neighbors. Who knew each other! And weren’t fans of each other! Cue your favorite frenemie wishlist!! Elijah and Shaw were crazy sweet as they stumbled into love together. Elijah was willing to take what Shaw was able to give because he just enjoyed spending time with Shaw so much. Little did Elijah know he was breaking down Shaw’s walls everyday. Their story was low angst, funny, sweet, romantic, and the sexy times were super hot. I’m excited to see where this new series goes because we met a lot of great characters within this story. First, there's no way I can be objective about this book. I lived in Atlanta for twenty years, where it takes place, starting in the 90's, most of those years with my husband. Before I met him, I was a single, muscled gym bro with a thing for twinks. One of my favorite hook-ups was a sweet, gorgeous, platinum-blond, biracial guy with a 26" waist and sensual kisses for days (who, I think, had a thing for his best friend, just like Elijah in this book). It's likely a common enough story if you know Atlanta (dudes falling for twinks, often interracial), and, aside from the fact that I'm not bi, this novel reads like a remixed version of my past. When Shaw (said muscle bro, a bi, 29 year old advice columnist) falls for Elijah (said twink, a 23-year old former dancer, whose type is perfectly captured by the cover) and the author describes the feeling of Elijah's long fingers on Shaw's body, I was totally caught in a visceral flashback from my past.Still, regardless of this impossible to separate overlap between my real life and this book, or perhaps because of it, I think Riley Hart nails this story.Yes, it's a bit Hollywood at times. But Hart balances the power and emotional dynamics between Elijah and Shaw beautifully, and tosses in some strong secondary characters for good measure. I'd love to know more about Elijah's parents, about Will, Brooklyn, and maybe even Richie, a guy whose past cries out for redemption. And Shaw's dysfunctional parents - a major reason he's afraid of his emotions and especially love? Well, not so much. But they provide an all-too-plausible context for understanding Shaw.Maybe it's Covid, or maybe I've found the set of authors who do it for me, but I had a few good cries reading this book. Shaw and I are different in a lot of ways, but, man, confronting your feelings and dealing with that fear? Again, Hart is right on the money.And the sex - which is usually of secondary importance to me in a novel - well, homerun on that score, too. Maybe it's memories of my hook-up buddy, or maybe my husband - who was a bendy twink when we met with killer dance moves like Elijah (he'll deny it to his dying day - he went all muscle-bound on me when he hit 35, and I still!l accuse him of false advertising), and whose gravitational field sucked me in, never to leave, that very first night with his glowing ebony skin, blinding smile, and easy laugh). I can't say anything about these scenes fit for public consumption except - Wow.
