I'm heterosexual woman, 42. I recommend this book if you are one too, who likes well written romance stories. I say this because others have found it “strange” wanting to read this book. I don’t know why, maybe bc it’s gay romance?I don't particularly like the cover, to the point that I put another cover on top of that one. I don't think that's how Nathaniel or Hawk would like to be portrayed, like two pieces of hot meat who are only about sex. I don’t think the expressions on their faces go fully with their personalities.I know, it's marketing.I know, they are just characters in a fiction novel.But once a good writer develops their characters, to me they are as alive as the other 7billion. And I’m a little passionate with this book (heard the audiobook like 5 times... ongoing).Nathaniel is a sensible young man, curious about sex but virgin. He's attracted to men, no doubts about that, but he's still confused about sex and what marriage with a woman is. When his life is in danger he’s avid to learn about sex while at the same time craving for romance. He is naive and caring and wants to be cared for.He's a well developed character with relatable struggles and much growth throughout the story. The sex scenes are great, you feel their passion and connection and learn a thing or two. I listened to the audiobook before buying the book, Collins as a great narrator, Nathaniel’s voice is perfect. I like reading so I bought the book as well.Conclusion: I LOVE keira andrews and I highly recommend this novel. First, you're not going to read this book for its literary merit - even though I enjoyed it and it's a good book when you simply want a diversion. Here's a quote:"The fear had left a strange desire thrumming through him. Not mere desire for the male form—that he’d felt for ages. But a yearning to reach out and take hold of life while he still could." The author packs a lot more such cliches into this book. For instance:"The kiss had been an invasion....Hawk had happily gone down with the ship, finally tasting Nathaniel. "You might think this kind of writing would sink this novel, too, but it doesn't. The author seems to find glee in piling the potboiler paragraphs high and deep - and somehow pulls a neat little trick. She somehow finds an emotional core or an emotional rhythm that other novels, one's which are not only cliche but poorly written and poorly executed, lack. You're not going to find an intensive emotional investigation of the character's psyche, but the author manages to convey a sense of authentic reactions under imaginary (e.g. stereotyped) circumstances - and it's this feeling of authenticity we can latch on to.Well, that and there is some damned hot sex between Captain Hawk, the 41 year old pirate, and Nathaniel, his 19 year old prisoner. Hot enough to make me weak in the knees, metaphorically if not literally. Let's just say I'll never look at a palm tree on the beach in the same way again. You'll need to read the book to see what I mean.
